YopybyWhile it is still in prototype stage (or at least it was recently at Comdex), from what we know, the Yopy is a PDA with a couple new twists. Like Agenda, G.Mate opted to go with a Linux operating system, a deviation from the recent influx of Pocket PC devices. And instead of adding the increasingly familiar QWERTY keyboard, the Yopy has a calculator-ish 40-key keypad. Also a bit different is the actual device layout, a clamshell design with a 3.5 inch screen that flips up from the keyboard, navigation pad, and device body. This is interesting in that the physical footprint of the device pretty much doubles as you operate it. Closed, the device measures 4.0 x 2.7 x 0.6 inches, and weighs 5.0 oz, which isn't too hefty. One advantage of this is that you can use the full 240 x 320 TFT LCD as you type on a keypad without having to use part of your onscreen display. However, the display is also touchscreen, so you can use a stylus to navigate through menus and such. The Yopy is a powerful device, running the 206 MHz StrongARM processor, and includes 64 MB RAM and 16 MB ROM. A Multimedia Card expansion slot is also available for additional memory or functionality. The rear cover is detachable, allowing you to add a jacket for CDMA coverage. Speaking of connectivity, while not innately wireless, the Yopy does have IrDA connectivity and is CDMA-ready. The cradle adds USB and RS232 connection options, as well. Powered by a 1280 mAh rechargeable Li-ion polymer battery, the Yopy is equipped with PIM software, Web browser, email, MP3 player, voice recorder, note pad and image pad, and handwriting recognition software. Pricing and Availability The Yopy will be available in Asia around January 2002 and in the U.S. and other markets in late 2002. Pricing will be around $450.
