Palm i705

by

With all of the Palm devices on the market right now, what could Palm possibly do to add more variety? How about create a device that has built-in wireless connectivity and added security, to boot? That is what the Palm i705 introduces to the PDA mix - the ability to retrieve emails from up to eight different POP3, IMAP4, or SMTP email accounts or access the Internet while you are on the go. But while the device is equipped with the Mobitex modem, you'll have to get Palm.Net service to actually take advantage of the wireless option.

Palm i705

Besides the simple added wireless capabilities, the i705 is loaded with Palm OS v4.1 and allows for secure email behind the firewall for corporate users, so IT managers can rest a little easier. Even when the device is off, users are notified of new email by a special sound, flashing red light, or quiet vibration. Internet access is offered through the MyPalm Portal, which allows you to access any URL, Web clipping application, or even AOL Instant Messenger.

The i705 comes with the usual infrared beaming ability, HotSync Cradle, and PIM software, including Address Book, Date Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, and Note Pad. In addition to the PIM software, it also has Documents To Go, which allows you to edit and create Word and Excel compatible files, and view and share PowerPoint files. If those programs aren't enough, you can add more software, or even just more memory, through the Palm Expansion Card Slot, which supports MultiMediaCard and SD expansion cards. For those that are really into add-ons, you'll be glad to see the Universal Connector on the bottom of the i705. This allows devices like digital cameras, keyboards, and GPS devices to be added quickly.

With all of these neat functions, it will still be hard for color-lovers to overlook the fact that the i705 comes with a transreflective monochrome 160 x 160 LCD. The i705 runs on a Motorola Dragonball VZ 33 Processor and has 8 MB RAM and 4 MB ROM. Its measurements are 3.06 x 4.65 x 0.61 in, and it weighs 5.9 oz.
