In many cultures thoughout history, gateways represent passage between civilization and the uncivilized world.  And why should the Internet by any different.   At least that what Symantec believes and why it has introduced its' Symantec Gateway Security appliances.   These devices provide an impenetrable wall with controlled access to the uncivilized Internet.

Symantec Gateway Security is an integrated gateway security appliance with five security functions designed to prevent breaches at a corporate network perimeter.

It combines:

  • intrusion detection
  • content filtering
  • VPN
Symantec Gateway Security Model 5200/5300
The unit is packaged as a turnkey appliance packaged with simple management console application.   The Gateway Security appliance is architected  to provide effective security protection for blended Internet attacks like CodeRed and Nimda.    The intrusion detection agent  scans Web and email traffic for known attack signatures in order to detect breaches and deploy countermeasures such as blocking packets from suspicious IP addresses.  The firewall engine employs full-inspection proxies, packet filtering, and network circuit-level checks to assess the entire Web packet for improper syntax, unusual characters, illegal commands, and other functions that security threats often exploit within network protocols.  Symantec is well known for its multi-threaded virus scanning engine and policy filter for detection and repair of infected files.   Included is Web content blocking and VPN capabilities which utilize AES, 3DES, and DES encryption algorithms.

Sold by the number network nodes that can that gateway can support, the Symantec Gateway Security appliance Model 5110 on the low end is geared toward small businesses supporting up to 50 nodes.   For medium size firms up to 250 nodes, Symantec offers the 5200 and on the high-end Symantec offers the 5300 which can support up to 1000 computers. Designed to fit in standard 1U 19 inch rack, it's dimensions measure 17.5in x 22.75in x 1.75in and weighs in at 23.5lbs. Onboard are four 10/100MB Ethernet ports, 2 serial ports, and an LCD display. Symantec like others in the security and other application industry are turning towards appliances to improve their ability to manage, upgrade and service customers in the most cost effective and convenient fashion.
