Nokia Media Terminal

by

The Nokia Media Terminal, jointly developed by Nokia and Intel, is an infotainment center that offers consumers full Internet access, interactive television, and personal digital recording. With Nokia's Media Terminal, the Internet and digital entertainment can be experienced in a new way, through the TV.

The Media Terminal is based on open technologies, including Linux operating system, Mozilla browser, HTML, JavaScript, and the x86 computer architecture. This open platform gives consumers access to a wide range of services and applications already available. It also enables development of additional content and services for the Media Terminal. Inside the Media Terminal is an Intel Celeron 366 MHz CPU (or faster), 32-64 MB SDRAM, and 1 MB flash. Equipped with an integrated v.90 POTS modem or a 10/100 BaseT Ethernet connection, the Media Terminal supports ISDN, ADSL, and Ethernet and Cable networking. It also comes equipped with at least a 20 GB hard disk for storage.

With the Media Terminal, users can browse the web, send and receive email with attachments, listen to Internet radio, play 3D network games (Linux-based), and take advantage of a variety of services such as, home shopping, online banking, or video-on-demand. It also features pause and replay of live broadcasts and split screen viewing of the TV and Internet. Furthermore, the Media Terminal functions as a personal video recorder, storing movies, music, and photos on the hard disk. Printers, digital cameras, game controllers, or other devices can be connected to the unit through its two USB and IEEE 1394 ports.

Nokia also developed the Nokia Navi bars user interface, so that users can have an easy, user-friendly interface with their Media Terminal. A remote control with a built-keyboard to facilitate Web browsing and email is also specially adapted for use with the Navi bars interface.

Pricing and Availability

The Media Terminal will be available in mid-2001 in Sweden, and late 2001 for US and European countries. No specific pricing information has yet been released.
