Qube 3

by

The Cobalt Qube 3 replaces the Qube 2 as the latest Internet server technology from Cobalt Networks, a business unit of Sun Microsystems. Cased in the same bright blue and black exterior, the recent developments have made the Qube 3 even more attractive on the inside.

The Qube 3 is intended for small- to medium-sized organizations with up to 150 users wanting to share web pages, files across the network, and process email and protect company data using a firewall. It is equipped with web based email, network auto-configuration, broadband connectivity support, Sun Cobalt BlueLinQ Application Delivery Service (for access to Cobalt updates and services), web publishing, access control, and 128-bit SSL encryption. If content quantity is your concern, the Qube 3 can handle more than 35 million web objects and 400,000 emails per day.

Sausalito, a software architecture, has been added for developers so they can integrate their applications with the system software and Qube 3 user interface. Cobalt has also incorporated a new open application programming interface (API) so developers can add menu items and buttons to the LCD panel, change the look and feel of the user interface, or even convert the user interface to a variety of languages. Along with the development software, the Qube 3 ships with Interbase SQL database form Inprise.

The Qube 3 runs on a 300 or 400 MHz Intel-compatible processor and has a 512KB L2 cache. It also has up to 512MB PC-100 SDRAM DIMMs, and a dual drive internal Ultra ATA/33 hard drive. For connectivity, there is a dual 10/100 Base-T Ethernet network interface, a USB port, and a serial console interface. The Qube 3 comes with a PCI slot for expandability.

The black and blue Qube 3 will take up 7.5 x 7.63 x 7.75 inches on your desktop, and will range from 8.3 lbs to 9.5 lbs if you decide to pick it up.
