PenCentra 200

by

Fujitsu's PenCentra 200 has been designed to make the life of a mobile worker more convenient and productive. This upgrade to the PenCentra 130 now gives the option of a Windows CE 2.11 or Windows Handheld PC 2000 operating system, and the ROM is directly correlated with the operating system, giving you 24 MB for CE or 32 MB for H/PC. As for the rest of the storage and memory, the PenCentra is packaged with 16 MB flash and 32 MB SDRAM, upgradeable to 64 MB.

Why do you need all of that space? To work, of course. And work you will, as the PenCentra is pre-loaded with Microsoft Pocket Office, Pocket Outlook, InkWriter, Microsoft Accessories, FPC Windows CE Utilities, and FPC Windows CE Software Development Tools. For Windows H/PC 2000, you'll also get ParaGraph, CalliGrapher, and ActiveSync. For Windows CE versions, Microsoft Windows CE Services v2.2, CIC Jot/HRS, and Java EVM will be included.

Now, it's one thing to be able to do work on these nifty devices, but in all likelihood, you won't permanently keep all of the information on the PenCentra alone. This is where connectivity comes in to play. The PenCentra's wide range of connectivity features include an integrated 56K v.90 modem, USB interface, PS/2 port, RS-232 serial port, an IrDA port, and a DC-in connector. The USB, PS/2, RS-232, and DC-in connector also function as docking ports, so you can put the PenCentra in a in the docking station that is sold separately. To expand the capabilities of the PenCentra, there are two PCMCIA Type II card slots, and it is wireless-ready for wireless LAN/WAN PC Card modems if you want to connect to a local network or the Internet.

But enough about the inside. Let's talk about the body. As for data input, you'll need to work with the touchscreen, which, not surprisingly, comes in one of two flavors. You can choose a color reflective SSTN VGA display, made for outdoor viewing, or you can choose a color transmissive DSTN VGA display, best for indoor viewing. Both are 8 inches, set up at a resolution of 640 x 480 with 256 colors. The overall casing is 8.9 x 6.5 x 1.3 inches and weighs 2 lbs. The rubberized handgrips will help keep your hands securely attached to this mobile device because once you get it in your hands, you probably won't want to let it go.

The PenCentra 200 is currently available at a base price of $1,600.
