Microsoft's Xbox is a gaming machine with the processing power of a PC. It also comes equipped with a DVD-player, built-in 8 GB hard drive, 8 MB memory card, Ethernet connection, and multi-signal audio/video connector.

The GAMECUBE is Nintendo's next generation gaming machine that tries to balance system performance with ease of software development. The GAMECUBE is a dedicated gaming machine and, unlike competitors, the GAMECUBE cannot playback DVD movies. The games are sold on 1.5-GB proprietary optical discs.

Sega's Dreamcast was the first gaming machine with a built in modem for online connectivity and 128-bit graphics. It was discontinued in early 2001.
